The optimism of a first race day of the season quickly turned sour for Mads Pedersen on Wednesday. The 30-year-old Dane is set to undergo surgery after crashing on stage 1 of the Volta Comunitat Valenciana. With a sprint finish on tap, Pedersen was among the pre-race favorites for the day, but instead, he suffered two fractures and went home early.

Lidl-Trek announced in the aftermath of the crash that Pedersen had broken his left wrist and right collarbone in the fall, which knocked him out of the race well before the finish. The team's promised update a few hours later was not a good one, revealing the fractures and the need for further treatment.
