Role: Tech Writer (APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSED)

We seek a creative writer and reporter who wants to bring their passion for bicycle equipment and technology to a worldwide audience. The ideal candidate lives and breathes bikes, loves tinkering, and can translate their zeal into writing, audio, and video. An underlying knowledge and interest in this beat is more important to us than degrees or formal qualifications.

We are a member-funded media company. Your job will be to produce content so good and so compelling that people will pay for it - if that sounds like something you can do, keep reading.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Produce world-class, in-depth reviews of the products our members and audience care most about
  • Stay on top of tech- and equipment-related news and trends
  • Provide unique, high-quality coverage of significant events
  • Appear on podcasts and, occasionally, video
  • Represent Escape Collective at tech events worldwide

Experience and skills:

A good tech writer has a broad range of skills. The following are high priority:

  • Broad background knowledge of bicycle tech, including road, mountain, gravel, cyclocross, and urban disciplines
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude and experience (shop experience preferred)
  • Comfortable expressing opinions and capable of backing them up with evidence
  • Strong writing skills with a distinctive voice
  • An infallible sense of personal integrity
  • Excellent grasp of English grammar and usage and an ability to produce clean copy and hit deadlines

And the following are nice to have, but can also be taught/learned on the job:

  • Proficient in still photography
  • Comfortable on video and podcasts
  • Experience using Adobe editing products (Photoshop, Lightroom)
  • Experience working in content management systems (CMS)
  • Comfortable working with a global team across multiple time zones via tools like Slack

Role: Contributor Network Lead

Location: Remote

The Mission

Escape Collective is building a contributor network: an expert-driven collection (see what we did there?) of writers, podcasters, and more who want to go deep within their chosen niche and bring world-class work to Escape's large and dedicated audience. The goal is not volume. The goal is trust, depth, and lived expertise.

To make that work, we need somebody who deeply understands what good journalism and editorial looks like and understands how to value that content.

This role exists to build, launch, and scale the structure that powers our contributor network. You will recruit and support high-quality journalists, creators, and subject-matter experts, and design the product and economic systems that allow them to contribute easily, get paid fairly, and stick around.

Opportunity

This is not a traditional commissioning or sub-editing role. It requires those skills and much more.

You will design the economic engine of Escape Collective’s expert and creator ecosystem. Your work will sit at the intersection of editorial judgment, product design, and business strategy.

You will answer questions like:

  • How do we identify and attract the right experts, not just more contributors?
  • How do we make contributing frictionless, repeatable, and rewarding?
  • How do we build transparent, motivating revenue-share systems that creators trust?
  • How does our contributor network create value for contributors and members at the same time?

Key Responsibilities
1. Product Strategy & Roadmap

  • Own the contributor network and associated revenue-share platform from 0 → 1.
  • Define the product roadmap and execute against it in close collaboration with editorial, engineering, and leadership.
  • Design payout mechanics, reporting, and dashboards that give contributors clear, real-time visibility into performance and earnings.
  • Map and continuously refine the expert contributor journey, from first contact through onboarding to sustained contribution.

2. Acquisition, Economics & Scale

  • Identify the talent: Proactively recruit journalists, niche experts, and storytellers whose knowledge genuinely deepens Escape Collective’s coverage.
  • Structure the model: Design and manage revenue-share tiers, contributor agreements, and incentive structures.
  • Build for scale: Work editorial, marketing, and partnership teams to ensure contracts, payments, and compliance are robust and scalable as the network grows.
  • Retain the best people: Develop systems that reward consistency, quality, and long-term participation.

    3. Editorial & Community Alignment
  • Partner with Escape Collective’s editors to ensure our contributor network complements and strengthens our core journalism.
  • Maintain editorial standards without turning the network into a top-down content mill.
  • Act as the primary advocate for contributors internally, and the steward of our contributor network externally.

What Success Looks Like

  • A clearly defined, trusted expert network with an initial cohort of high-quality contributors.
  • Contributors who understand how they get paid, trust the system, and want to participate regularly.
  • A revenue-share product that is simple, transparent, and scalable.
  • Building a contributor network that becomes a meaningful driver of member value and long-term growth.

Who you are

  • You have journalistic chops and sensibilities, but don't limit yourself to content production; you understand how and why modern media business models function (or don't) and are interested in making them function better.
  • Background in editorial, the creator economy, media platforms, or two-sided marketplaces.
  • Experience building or managing contributor networks, freelance ecosystems, or platform products is a strong plus.
  • You understand incentives and behavioral economics.
  • You think in systems, not one-off solutions.
  • You care deeply about fairness, transparency, and trust.
  • Equal parts product manager, business developer, and editor.
  • Comfortable designing processes and rolling up your sleeves to recruit people one by one.
  • Able to move between strategy and execution without losing momentum.

Why Join Us?

  • Impact: You won't be a cog in a wheel. You will define the growth trajectory of a respected media brand.
  • Autonomy: We want to learn from you. You will have the freedom to test, experiment, and build the department as you see fit.
  • The Team: Work with a passionate team dedicated to preserving the integrity and excitement of cycling media.

Pay

Salary range is negotiable depending on experience. Individuals outside of Australia work as contractors and anybody US-based will receive a health care stipend.
